The third day of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships Mazury 2013 came to a gripping close with the women’s pool play concluded while the men’s competition completed the second day of their group play at Stare Jablonki on Wednesday. On Thursday, the men’s competition will finish pool play while women’s one will see the Round of 32 completed. In the match of the day, Antonelli and Agatha (no. 6) will face Chinese Xue and Zhang Xi (no. 2).

Women’s Tournament:

Maria Antonelli and Agatha Bednarczuk advanced to the elimination rounds of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships Mazury 2013 with their third straight win.

In their final pool match on Wednesday the Brazilians beat Germany’s Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst 2-0 (21-17 21-11) in a clash that decided who topped the pool.

Antonelli and Bednarczuk quickly found their rhythm and put pressure on Germany right from the start.

“The game was easy to play because we built our rhythm during the match and in the second set we played our best and wanted to win as quickly as possible,” Antonelli said. “We knew the German team has an aggressive style so we had to play aggressively as well and when that happens it is easy for us, not matter who we are playing.”

“We prepared well yesterday,” Bednarczuk added. “We were watching some videos of their technique and what to expect from them.”

“Our co-operation is very good,” Antonelli said. “We are very experienced and understand each other. We are targeting a win in these World Championships and hope to meet another Brazilian team in the final.”

Germany’s Borger and Buthe too strong for Italy

In another battle to top the pool on centre court Germany’s Britta Borger and Karla Buthe defeated Italy’s Greta Cicolari and Marta Menegatti 2-1 (21-16 17-21 15-13). Germany played a very clean game in the first set, but Italy came back strong in the second.

Borger started the tiebreak with another ace, which she can add to the 11 she hit in the first two days of the World Champs. Both teams made a lot of mistakes and had reception problems, but it was Germany who took a lead at 14-13 and Borger finished the game with their first match point.

Another win for the Finnish Nystrom twins

After their major win over first seeded Chen Xue and Zhang Xi on Tuesday, Emilia and Erika Nystom continued their campaign with another 2-0 (23-21 21-11) win, over Polish team Daria Paszek and Katarzyna Kociolek.

“The game was good and we had a little pressure on us and that is why the first set was very tight. In the second set we controlled ourselves and that is why the second set was better for us,” Emilia Nystrom said.

“It is our first time against this Polish team and we knew it would be really hard because Polish beach volleyball growing.”

Paraguay under the spell of beach volleyball

In Paraguay this week it is all about beach volleyball on the sport channels and in the newspapers and the reason for this is that Patricia ‘Pati’ Caballero and Michelle Valiente are making history as the first Paraguayan team to qualify for the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships.

“We have talked to almost every media back home”, Pati said. “Football is the most important sport in our country, but everyone is cheering for us now and we have a lot of fans. Everyone is keeping their fingers crossed for us.”

Until this year 29-year old Pati and her 15-year old partner Michelle, who’s the youngest player in Stare Jablonki, only competed on the South American Tour, where their best result was reaching the quarterfinals at the Chilean and Venezuelan legs.

In order to prepare for their international debut they entered the Corrientes Grand Slam this year and finished 41st in their first World Tour event. “It costs a lot to travel, so we only play in the countries close by”, Pati explained. “I have a daughter and a husband and we are not playing professionally, so it’s hard to get the money. Michelle still goes to school.”

Despite Michelle’s studies and Patti’s fulltime job, they practice together every day in Asuncion, the capital of Paraguay. But there are not a lot of people to practice with. “We have a maximum of 10 beach volleyball teams in Paraguay and only in the capital. Everybody plays football because we don’t have beaches. There’s no sand, so we make up artificial courts.”

Start a trend

Patti hopes their historic trip to the World Championships will change that. “With this tournament we might start a trend and get people interested in beach volleyball.”

That is one of the main reasons they are really set on making a good impression. “We want to play as long as we can and motivate the children and younger people to play, so some day they can play professionally. Not only to participate but also to win competitions and appear on tournaments like this.”

Pati and Michelle could not add a victory to their World Champs success story yet. They lost their first match 2-0 (21-13 21-16) to Dutch Meppelink and Van Gestel, but they fought hard against Kazakhstan’s Tatyana Mashkova and Irina Tsimbalova and won the first set in a 2-1 defeat (14-21 21-16 15-12). On Wednesday they will have a last chance against USA’s Fopma and Sweat.

Men’s tournament:

Home favourites Grzegorz Fijalek and Mariusz Prudel already secured a spot in the knockout rounds after their second straight win at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships Mazury 2013, but say they are still keeping something in reserve.

“You can’t show everything from the beginning, but we’re trying to play good enough to win. I think we are getting better every day”, Fijalek said on Wednesday after their 2-0 (21-18 21-15) win over the Chilean cousins Esteban and Marco Grimalt. “The most important thing is that we are winning, that’s what counts in sports.”

The Grimalts put up a good fight against the Polish team and their fans on centre court. Both teams sided-out very well until 17-17, from there the home team took charge. The second set was almost a copy of the first one, but this time Fijalek and Prudel took the lead from 14-14 with some great kill blocks by Prudel.

Mexican duo shock Austrians to make history

Mexican pair Juan Virgen and Lombardo Ontiveros made history when they beat Robin Seidl and Alexander Huber at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships Mazury 2013 on Wednesday, their first victory in only their second match at the tournament.

Virgen and Ontiveros put Seidl and Huber on the backfoot early on with some aggressive play and held on to win the first set. In the second the Austrians fought back to draw level, but the Mexicans were quickly in the ascendancy in the tie-break, built an early lead and then won the match 2-1 (21-18, 7-21, 15-12) with a powerful spike from Virgen.

“It was a very difficult match,” Virgen said. “Seidl and Huber are very good players, they have good hands and we have been analysing their style of play since Rome. We were trying to concentrate as much as we could and because we knew them, we knew it wasn’t going to be an easy match.”

Australians set up clash with local favourites

Christopher McHugh and Isaac Kapa face the biggest test of their fledgling partnership when they set up a final pool match against local favourites Grzegorz Fijalek and Mariusz Prudel. The Australians didn’t take long to beat Spain’s Inocencio Lario Carrillo and Javier Monfort Minaya 2-0 (21-17, 21-7). It is their second win in two at the World Championships and means that they top their pool narrowly from Poland’s Fijalek and Prudel, who have also won both fixtures.
“Fijalek and Prudel are a great team,” McHugh said. “We are playing in a great stadium here in Stare Jablonki with great spectators, so we will see how it goes.
“We are a new team and it is our first World Championships together and we had great success at the beginning. We are playing here day by day and trying to take it as far as we can.”

Lesson from the master

Brazil’s Ricardo Santos began another campaign to add to his bulging collection of World Championships medals when he and new partner Alvaro Filho beat the Czech Republic’s Premysl Kubala and Petr Benes 2-0 (21-16, 22-20).

After a first set in which the Brazilian pair dominated, the Czechs fought their way back into the match, but couldn’t quite do enough to take the match to a tie-break. It means that Ricardo and Alvaro now have two wins from two and are building the momentum needed for Ricardo to add to the one gold medal and two silvers that he has from previous World Championships.

“For me playing with Ricardo is a dream,” Alvaro said. “Everyone wants to play with Ricardo, players like him are legends. For me it is my first year with him and he helps me a lot.”

“Playing with Ricardo improves my chances, because he has so many Olympics and World Championships behind him, so he helps me playing in tournament and gives me advice. We play one match each day and the pressure is really high, so we need to be really focused and play at the same level each match.”
