Volleyball news and results from the Serbian volleyball league can be found this season on volleycountry. Many of the world’s most famous players started their careers in the league.

The first Serbian League after the break up of Former Yugoslavia was played in 1992 with teams from Serbia and Montenegro. The most successful club is VK Vojvodina Novi Sad who has won an amazing eleven titles, winning nine in a row from 1992 – 2000 and adding another two in the last nine years.

Montenegrin clubs had won four titles until the countries independence with Buducnost Podgorica being the most successful winning three of them and Budvanska Rivijera the other. Red Star Belgrade has won two titles and recently the defending champions surprise package Radnicki Kragujevac won its first title.

There have been some memorable matches throughout the years and big rivalries especially the one between Vojvodina and Red Star Belgrade and memorable matches against the Montenegrin teams which are always watched by screaming volleyball mad fans. The games attract many fans and are played with an electric atmosphere.

Since the 90s the league produced the greatest players in the countries history that would ofcourse go on and bring Serbia many medals at International tournaments and put the country on the World Volleyball map, and by doing so they made volleyball one of the countries most popular sports.

The Grbic brothers were both members of the countries best club Vojvodina Novi Sad. Nikola, won the league during the 1993-94 season and would go on to and be one of the best setters in the game and have a successful volleyball career in Italy. Ivan Miljkovic started his career with Partizan Belgrade and would go on to be one of the best scorers in world volleyball and one of the best players in the last ten years.

The Serbian Volleyball League officially known as Wiener Stadtische Liga is the Premier Volleyball competition in the country and the region. The competition is contested by eight clubs and every month the best player in both the men?s and women?s league is awarded with the Player of the Month Award which adds to the continuing growth and recognition of one of Serbia?s most popular sports. The league has become a core for young talent and is constantly growing day by day. The 2009/2010 Season begins on October 10th.
