In the penultimate round Cuneo, classified on the fourth position, lost against Macerata in four sets. The current Italian champion moved to the second place, but has no chance for leadership before the playoffs.
Thanks to the win, Lube Banca Macerata gained 3 important points (47) and moved to the second position, right behind Itas Diatec Trentino (51), which also won in this round, having beaten in straight sets Marmi Lanza Verona, which closes the classification with 9 points. Among the top four teams there is also Copra Elior Piacenza (44 points) and previously mentioned Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo (40). The last round will decide which team, Macerata or Piacenza, will take the (better) second position before the playoffs.
In Macerata Cuneo played without Earvin Ngapeth, who acquired a light injury during the preparation for the match. Macerata, on the other hand, could profit from the comeback of Jiri Kovar after a long break. Lube dominated in attack (51% – 45%) and has better reception (pos. 59%, prf. 34% – pos. 51%, prf. 27%). Cuneo gained 13 points in block (10 Macerata) and served more aces (8, including 3 made by Oleg Antonov and 2 by Wout Wijsmans, compared with 3 aces of Lube, 2 by Ivan Zaytsev and 1 by Cristian Savani). The MVP has been chosen Ivan Zaytsev, who scored 29 points with 55% in attack. From the other side the best scorer was Tsvetan Sokolov with 22 points (1 ace, 4 blocks and 40% on the net).
Alberto Giuliani, head coach of Macerata, said: “We wanted to close the regular season in the Fontescodella hall on the second place and we managed to do it. This position gives an advantage in playoffs and also about 90% possibility to compete in the next year’s Champions League, so it’s an important goal”.
