I would like to see more substitutions during the matches. I suggest that a few very detailed changes in the regulations which could hinder hit the ball by attacker to be introduced“, propose Doug Beal.

How according to your philosophy should coaches choose players to the team? What should players characterized by?
I think this question refers to the following issue: universal player versus player with particular skills. It seems to me that in the case of younger players we want them to acquire a wide range of skills. However the role of particular players begins to narrow down along with progressing process of defining their function at the court. Perhaps we should ask players to perfectly master a few selected skills instead of expect them to be perfect at everything. Anyway this discussion is constant, without any sights on satisfied resolution.

What is the importance of money in achieving success? Can richer achieve more?
I believe most people connected with that sport realize that money plays a growing role in volleyball’s evolution. Even if that trend is not positive thing you can manage it effectively and it does not have to be negative factor or that restricting access to this sport for all population segments. We had a lot of successful players in our national team who were descended from all socio-economic spheres.

In that case, what has influence on achieving successes apart from money?
I believe cooperation between national team and authorities of domestic federation is equally important as other factors. This regularity occurs in every country. The better path is defined the greater chance of achieving success.

You have great training centers in Anaheim and Colorado Springs. What coaches should have in such a place?
We had a few locations of training centers. We believe that mature players have to be responsible for making proper decisions regarding their lifestyles and significance of sport in their life. Without a doubt sports facilities play a key role: its access, standards of premises, gymnasiums, access to medical services, as well as attractive location for players is very important. We are lucky because we have great relationships with local community in Anaheim who understand our goals and tasks. I believe we will be carry on with this cooperation because it makes a significant contribution to our successes.

Technology came to volleyball and its attendance is increasing rapidly. Is it possible to achieve success in that sport without making use of such devices as laptop?
I think we have a lot of examples of great results achieved without excessive relying on technology. However volleyball is not an exception – there are some signs of increasing “dependence” on new changing abilities. Coaches increasingly use video or information technology which allows them to manage the time more effectively and supply proper information for their teams. I don’t observe declining tendency in use of modern technology by coaches. I think quite the opposite. Coaches are expected to acquaint themselves with modern training methods. Chances are that sphere of coaches’ work will develop.

Looking ahead even further, how do you see development of volleyball? What would you expect?
I hope of a few changes in the near future. I would like to see more substitutions during the matches. I suggest that a few very detailed changes in the regulations which could hinder hit the ball by attacker to be introduced. I would like to see more technological solution which could make the match more attractive for both fans in the grandstands and viewers. I also would like the requirements for judges to be increased. I believe there is still a lot of place for introduction positive changes in our sport which could facilitate the access to volleyball and increase its popularity.
