8) Prisoner Game

Made mainly for kids, this game is a good introduction to volleyball and a way to teach basic skills such as volleying and spiking. Players form a circle with one person sitting on the floor in the middle of that circle. The space inside is the prison and the person/s sitting in it – the prisoner. The outer players volley the ball to each other until one of them decides to spike on the prisoner. If they miss, they join the prisoner. TEventually, the prison can get crowded and full of people in it while only two or three people are left standing outside. If someone makes any type of error during the passing, they also have to enter the prison. If a prisoner catches the ball spiked towards them, everyone leaves the prison and only the spiker sits inside it. The ultimate purpose of the game is to become the only one left outside the prison.

9) Hit and Run Drill

A great warm-up game for players at any level, the Hit & Run is very easy to explain and deliver. In this game, the 3rd meter line serves as a baseline with the players from both teams covering the front court (yellow zone). Players play first to 10 or 15 points under normal volleyball rules, apart from the fact that anything behind the 3rd meter line is called out. Additionally, and most importantly, every time a player touches the ball (before, during or after the rally!), they must run to the original baseline (or even to a farther point), touch it and run back to play. As an extra rule, the coach can make players wait in the back court (after they ran to their outer base) until there are not more than 2 or 3 players in the front court. Or, the coach may want to use this as a conditioning exercise and make the players run to the baseline and then do some star jumps or press-ups before they come back to play.

10) One less Winner Game

The ‘One less Winner’ game can be played by as many people that can fit the court. It is not competitive in the sense that teams play against one another until a winner is declared. This is simply due to the fact that teams are in constant exchange of players. In this game, every time a team wins the point, it has to send the player that last touched the ball to play for the opposite team. Thus, the game can be played in different forms such as 8v4, 9v3 or even 10v2 volleyball. ‘One less Winner’ develops the special awareness of players, their adaptability and communication skills.
