After the first round of Champions League, only two teams of pool G collected any points.
In Zalau, Romania, hosts were very close from making a surprise and win the first set with Cuneo. They had a lot of set balls, but they couldn’t make any use of those, so they finally paid a price. Although Cuneo had some real issues with their game, Nikola Grbic helped to put it together and the meeting finished in three sets. The last set was clearly dominated by CUNEO that had even 7 points of margin and seemed very confident. Andrea Rossi scored a few outstanding attacks while setter Nimir Abdel-Aziz served spectacularly and blocked well (25-18).
Remat ZALAU’s head coach, Mariusz Sordyl, stated after the match: “Each point gained by Remat was a success. The first set was extremely good for us and the spectators, who definitely enjoyed it. I’m not happy that we lost, but taking into consideration the way we played, I’m very optimistic for the next Champions League matches”.

Arago de Sete, one of the rookies included in the starting field of the 2013 Champions League lost its home debut in Pool G with Polish champion, Asseco Resovia. However, guests didn’t play very good either. The game was rather poor and full of mistakes. “We gave over 20 points to our opponents only on service!” – Andrzej Kowal (head coach of Asseco) admitted. In the first set Baptiste Geiler and Jochen Schöps stood out in offense for Sete and Resovia respectively with the score remaining close before the guests could claim a break of three points going up 19:22 via the contribution of Aleh Akhrem and Paul Lotman. After that, Asseco Resovia remained focused and could claim the set with the score of 23:25. Arago de Sete woke up during the third part and literally beat their rivals and take many points from Resovia’s mistakes. However, Polish team managed to save three points, but later on they were not very proud of the performance they made: “We didn’t do very well, but we are glad about the winning” – Olieg Achrem said on the press conference.
