Last weekend was a great one for in the World League Volleyball. A lot of interesting games, surprises, disappointments and a lot of Young Blood players making their path to success.
First of all and that impresses me, was the full house I saw at Sears Centre Arena (Hoffman Estates, Illinois), with capacity for 11,200 fans, where Poland looked like home team against the USA, but the Americans dominated in both games. Keep in mind that in the USA, the greater amount of volleyball lovers are from California. But something makes me think that in the state of Illinois, “Polish Rules”.
Other team that called my attention was the team of Iran who crushed the Russians easily. By the way, I think Russia is having their worst tournament ever. Also Australia gave a surprise too when beat Italy 3-0 on Friday.
Serbia and Brazil provided a great spectacle with two 5 sets matches dividing honors. Isac Santos and Riad Garcia from Brazil made a good impression in their game, especially with the Jump Serve.
At the end of last week the Teams with the best options in Group one are: USA (6-0, 17 pts), Brazil (5-1, 14 pts), Italy & Poland (4-2, 11 pts each). But don’t forget Serbia who’s knocking at the door.
For this weekend Brazil goes to Rome to face Italy where also Bernardo Rezende can coach again and maybe we will see Sidao and Lucas again. Serbia can gain some points against Australia and Iran are looking for revenge against the USA who look very strong at this moment.
On group two Belgium, Canada and France rule their respective pools followed by Netherlands and Bulgaria. The Netherlands need to continue winning to keeping alive their chances while Bulgaria has reserved their spot in the Finals as host country.
Group 3 got my attention when I saw the Latin-American teams (Puerto Rico, Mexico and Venezuela) last in each one with only one point accumulated. Also in this group there are an interesting race between Montenegro, China, Egypt and Spain with Greece and Turkey with some options.
Predictions: Looks like an easy road for winners by 2-0 margin. My odds go with Bulgaria, the Netherlands, the USA, Poland & Serbia. Brazil vs Italy, simply I close my eyes because both teams are playing intercalating their best players.
